I know I've been wearing sheer non-stop, but I can't help it! Whenever I shop, it's the first thing I gravitate toward and before I know it I'm buying
another see-through top. Speaking of which, apparently a while back, a retailer posted an outfit of mine on their Facebook wall, and a reader informed me that it got a lot of negative feedback. People were saying how I shouldn't be wearing sheer at my size. I didn't check it (I know better), but I do forget that lots of people reading my blog are relatively new. I thought this would be a good opportunity to remind everyone that though this is a fashion blog, it's rooted in body acceptance. That means I refuse to dress "for my size," instead I dress to express my style. I pick out the same items (or at least styles) I'd wear if I were a size two. I have no issue showing my midriff, arms, legs, or anything else. I hope I don't sound preachy, and I know everyone doesn't subscribe to this way of thinking, but I just wanted to let you guys know where I'm coming from :)
When I saw this sheer polka dot button up in a newsletter from
NastyGal, I immediately fell in love (there are cut-outs on the shoulders and in the back--SO cute). I paired it with khakis and my favorite spike collar necklace from Forever21.

As you can see, I decided to go back to dark hair for the fall. The amazing people at
Arrojo Salon invited me back last week to celebrate the fact that they are now open on Sundays! I got my hair dyed, cut, and styled by an amazing team of people. If you're a New Yorker, you should definitely check it out. They are offering two for one specials on Sundays for the rest of the month!
F*ckin fab!
ReplyDelete(girl...some people just don't get it. if they're not ok with themselves, that's their business, not anyone else's. with that being said, I just want you to know i LOVE your confidence, eff them self esteem sufferers!)
You look friggin' amazing. Love everything about this 'fit!
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of idiots out there. I'm so glad you don't pay them any attention.
That top is everything, but I LOOOOVE the glasses especially. I've been searching for the right pair of perfect circles frames but have had no luck! So chic, Gab.

LOVE this whole outfit! I love that you don't dress like they say a plus size woman should. Do you girl!!
ReplyDeletehttp://frugalbiggirl.blogspot.com/
Love it! Love it!
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why people feel the need to voice their negative opinion about plus-sized women and their fashion. So they expect us to walk around all day and wear moo moo's? NO SIR-REE! Any way, love the top..love the outfit and most importantly KEEP ROCKIN' IT :)

Absolutely love it! That shade of red is just all kinds of perfect! I like the cut of the top too! Now that you've spent over a year in NYC, I'm wondering how you feel that place has/has not influenced your style. Does NYC's energy kind of embrace creativity with clothing or do you think you'd still dress the same way no matter where you live?
ReplyDeletei really like the lips paired with the shirt!
ReplyDeletewould you say your arms are kinda smallish or average compared to your size? i think my arms size me out of many oversized straight size tops, so i was just curious about that. hope i'm not being too nosy!
hey gabi,
ReplyDeletei love the way you dress but i dont know how to incoperate it into my style, and how to do it on a college students budget? do you have any suggestions? i love your confidence as well, I am trying to build mine up. you are hot!
Fab U Lous! When you're too big, you shouldn't do this or that. When you're too skinny, you shouldn't do that or this. So..... I say you do what makes you feel great!
ReplyDeleteMeravigliosa . . .Yes, You can wear Sheer and everthing You Love as You're an Artist of Fashion!
ReplyDeleteChapeau . . .Molti complimenti per il tuo Stile!
Ciao, Best regards from Italy by fellow Artist Aurè
I like so many things about this post, 1.the outfit-especially the sheer shirt, 2. your confidence, 3. that you wear what you LOVE, not what others tell you you should wear, and 4. the way you rock your outfits! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYou look AMAZING in that outfit! I'm always drawn to sheer too, I love it so much, but I have actually gone out to events here in Sydney and come home to abusive tweets about how I shouldn't be wearing what I wore as "everyone at the event was laughing at me" Obviously PR and magazine girls who starve themselves to work in the industry are jealous that I don't and I still get the work, lol. Don't listen to what anyone says you look unreal in that shirt! xxx
ReplyDeleteYou look great.... I too have fallen in love with the sheer polka dot tops but I had to stop myself because they all started looking the same ....some with Pussybows, cut outs etc
ReplyDelete"I refuse to dress 'for my size,' instead I dress to express my style. I pick out the same items (or at least styles) I'd wear if I were a size two. I have no issue showing my midriff, arms, legs, or anything else." -- This is exactly why I LOVE this blog and admire what you do.
ReplyDeleteYou freakin rock! You've help me more then You know keep posting your style is fab!
ReplyDeletelove this look! I need that blouse in my life, and the berry lips are perfect.

Looking Good as always. Just do what you want and keep on inspiring curvy girls around the globe. Love from Finland, Rebekka
ReplyDeleteI've been buying tons of sheer stuff recently, too - you should check out H&M; I recently got a really awesome sheer polka dot shirt from them that reminds me of the one you're wearing :)
ReplyDeleteI really don't understand why people have such a problem with plus-sized women dressing fashionably. Women of every size deserve to feel pretty - it's very offensive that people think that women's bodies are a public space to say whatever they want about.
Anyway, you rock and I love your style!
The hate's never even worth looking at. As always. you look fanfuckingtastic. I'm ten kinds of in love with that top, not to mention the shades. Of course, I'm also super-jealous that you need sunglasses right now, but that's a whole 'nother story.
ReplyDeleteYou ALWAYS look great in the outfits you post! Keep them coming....loving the dark hair!
ReplyDeleteGabi, thanks for voicing how thousands of women feel. You look fierce. I'm feeling the sheer polka dots and looking forward to how you will transition these pieces when the weather gets chilly.
ReplyDeleteWear what u feel. you're fabulous & u know it. Body confidence scares people. they'll get over it. The shirt is sooooooo awesome (polka dots are my fave) & the berry lip to match is inspiring. the nude wedges are classy.
ReplyDeleteI love your style and your taste! I am a size 6/8, and hell, I've tried finding some of the same outfits for my size. Piss on those Debbie Downers! I think you look great!
ReplyDeleteAnd...I'm still trying to find one of those "Dorothy" capes (beige with sparkly polka dots)!!! I have been searching like a mad fool! that thing is awesome!
ReplyDeleteI saw this on someone's blog earlier this year: "There is something subversive about being a fashionable, confident fat woman". LOVE. I read and love your blog as much for your confidence as for the fashion. Keep it up. :)
ReplyDeleteExtra Lame! I'm so sorry...in person or online...people talking crap hurts. I love your blog and your confidence! I totally think you have the shape to pull off what you wear…you don’t really have rolls from what I can tell!
ReplyDeleteI was out over the weekend wearing my new Forever21 + Barbie Raglan Top (http://polishedplus.blogspot.com/2011/10/life-in-plastic.html) and got made fun of…”Like OMG…she thinks she looks like Barbie!?”
1…2…3…over it! She’s just jealous…she totally wants my top!
hi gabby i c on the website they only go up to a large in this shirt......so do they have bigger sizes or is this the large? because I want to order this shirt because just like you i am obsessed with sheer everything lol but plz get back to me because I really want to order this shirt
ReplyDeleteyou look amazing - keep doing what you do!
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone!
ReplyDelete@theplussideofme I don't think living in NYC has changed my look that much. My style has definitely evolved but I find most of my inspiration from fellow bloggers etc.
@Kiddotrue I have avg arms for my frame, which means they are pretty big. I'm def sized out of some stuff bc of sleeves, but can usually tell which will fit. I love dolman/batwing sleeves for that reason!
@zambianqueen I love inexpensive stores like forevr21, h&m, thrift stores etc. It's definitely possible to be stylish on a budget.
@plus size girlie, the top is size large
you just stated one of the primary reasons you are such an inspiration to me..i won't wear a sheer top without a camisole not because of my size but because i prefer not to go out that way given i live in a pretty conservative country and my zillion stretch marks make me feel uncomfortable to even wear a sleeveless now...haters will be haters..you rock!
ReplyDeleteI love your style and confidence. I too am a big girl, and I have to admit, some of the things you wear, I wouldn't dare (but you still look fab). With that being said, I completly agree that you should dress to express your own style and not to reflect what others believe. I just wore a shear top last friday, with my plunge bra and a mini skirt. I looked so fab!
ReplyDeleteDo you! It's their problem if they don't like it. Love the look!

ReplyDeletewell fuck them! Gabi you look amazing!!! You are a plus size girl who knows ho to dress herself no matter what!!!
ReplyDeleteamazing!
ReplyDeleteI adore your style and have followed you foreverI think no matter body size that top is too sheer to go without a cami underneath. Seeing the bra takes away from the fab of the look. Haters can't stand your confidence..whatev
ReplyDeletewonderful!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely stunning. This is fabulous. I love the shirt and the hair in a high bun is so chic. Loves!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.fabellis.com
I swear my eyes are wide and my mouth is hung agape! You look stunning girl! That top is ridiculously sick!!! SICK I tell ya! I love the hair and the sunnies. Those pants are a perfect neautral to wear with that top! You are rocking this look like nobodys business, oh and speaking of business, people need to get some!! It is sad that people are so focused on the size and weight of others. Funny thing is, most of those people are sad, lonely and angry. God looks at the heart and not the outward appearance of man. Obviously, these people need heart work! Keep doing you BOO!! Love ya girl! Kiah
ReplyDeleteyou look amazing, girl! I love the top with the crop and the cutouts! and the pattern is just adorable!

the blog of worldly delights
Curvy girls always get the side-eye treatment. But as Pres. O learned from Jay-Z... dust your shoulders off (as you clearly do) and keep it pushin'. You look good because your confidence is strong. There are much smaller girls with far more extreme body image probles. So while people tend to pick at the curvy girls, they should focus more attention on those who aren't eating AT ALL - which is the same as not eating healthy. GEEZ!
ReplyDeleteBTW... I love this look.

You look great! I love see-through too, and I think anyone can wear it as long as it's styled well. It could be styled wrong or right on a person no matter what their size is. Keep it up, can't wait to see more of your upcoming looks!

Your outfits are always so awesome and fun, to hell with whatever anyone else says. You've inspired me (a solid size 24) to wear more sheer things!!
ReplyDeleteI would love to spend a day shopping and putting together outfits with you, it would be SO MUCH FUN. I'm going to be in the city this weekend, wanna meet up at Re\Dress? ;)
You are Fabulous.
ReplyDeleteI think you look great. I think people think that just because it's the internet they feel they can say whatever they like. OH PLEASE post where your shoes are from. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteBluebox89
Agreed - dress however the eff you want! As long as you feel good who cares!
ReplyDelete- Sara @ Gameday Stylist
well first off you're my favorite fashion blogger - plus size or otherwise - and when I posted a link to your blog, it got lots of GOOD comments from everyone (even the size two girls). people just like to hate and hatin' as a group is one of many ways people bond, so who gives a shit. i love you and so does every one i know (i don't know a single person who doesn't love you, your style, your work and your message. love love love). also your body is banging LOL - you look so stinkin' hot always.
ReplyDeleteI love the sheer top, and totally do the same thing, just keep buying the same (only slightly different!) top over and over. haha.
ReplyDeleteSo lucky you got your hair done at the Arrojo salon!!
Chic on the Cheap
Love it!!! You look gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI found your blog when I was recovering from an eating disorder, and your attitude helped me so much, it gave me a new out look that helped towards my own self acceptance.Just thought you should know that!
ReplyDeleteI'm in love with your shoes!! AMAZING
ReplyDeleteI just recently found your website. I must say you are inspiring! You've opened my eyes about dressing myself. I'm always been in love with fashion, but never thought I could indulge because of my size, but you have knocked that notion out of my mind! I look at dressing myself entirely different now. And you look fabulous! Rock that sheer shirt!
ReplyDelete"I refuse to dress "for my size," instead I dress to express my style. I pick out the same items (or at least styles) I'd wear if I were a size two."
ReplyDeleteI agree with Heather - your confidence is subversive. It's revolutionary too. You are my self-esteem and body image role model. I feel so much gratitude towards you for showing us how to go against the grain with such sass.
you look amazing and no its not 'too preachy' to point out little home truth. Its amazing how vicious the female species are to each other. Be you and continue to inspire.
ReplyDeleteHAHAHA~Ive been gravitating to sheer too. It makes me feel pretty. I am enjoying your blog. I am new to the blogging culture and I appreciate your inspiration-http://alilpieceofmysoul.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteBare whatever you want, girl... You look amazing! PS: Where are those shoes from? LOVE!
ReplyDeleteYES!!!! Love it, and boy, do you look fab!!! I haven't bought a sheer piece yet, but I plan to for my next solo show. You've inspired me as well.
ReplyDeleteI love her style, how about making a bazaar?!
ReplyDeleteHere in Brazil, is very complicated to have fashionable clothes in larger size.
I stumbled across your blog and I absolutely love it. Your fashion is always on top. You are beautiful and just know sexy is neither size 2 or 22, its HEALTHY. Keep up the good work
ReplyDeletegotta have that top! i need it! *sighs*
ReplyDeleteThis outfit is super sexy & you look AMAZING in it! Love the blouse and the paperbag waist on the pant and the shoes! 10 10 10!!
ReplyDeleteYou are daring , and that's the type of girl I'd love to meet and be friends with ! Great outfit.
