Happy Halloween!

It's my first time spending Halloween in the same city as my boyfriend, so we definitely wanted to celebrate by doing a couples' costume. After going back and forth about whether to dress up as Kimye (which we still may save for something), it hit me: we could be Will and Hilary Banks! The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air pretty much made my childhood, and the costumes would be so easy and original. We made a trip to a few thrift stores and our outfits were born (though, uh, I owned almost everything already, minus the accessories. Also, he's wearing my pants). We had entirely too much fun:

I hope you guys have a blast today! I'm obsessed with Halloween, so if you had a cool costume, leave a link to photos/your blog in the comments!

I've been doing a pretty good job this year of incorporating more color into my everyday wardrobe, but I'll admit--with the return of the crisp fall air, I've slipped back into wearing lots of head-to-toe black. It's one of my favorite looks; an all black ensemble is chic, timeless, and effortless. The key to making it interesting is by layering and mixing textures.

I've teamed up with one of my favorite places to get affordable, on-trend items, Fashion to Figure, to show you how fun details in black pieces (like mesh, cut-outs, sequins, etc) can make an otherwise boring outfit come to life. Today I wore their sparkly mesh peplum dress (available here), but I wore it as a top! The dress is definitely a night-out statement piece (perfect for upcoming holiday parties), but by adding a coat (available here), skinnies and flats, I accomplished a completely different look.

I also got this cutout button up and this mesh insert dress which are great for this effect! More to come soon.

SimplyBe HQ Tour

When I arrived in Europe, the first thing I did was get a tour of SimplyBe's headquarters in Manchester. I got a sneak preview of upcoming lines (some available on the website now) and talk to designers and art directors for the company. It was an amazing experience, and I'm so glad we got to capture it on film. Check out the video and let me know what you think. (PS: after watching it, you'll know why I said my hair was not cooperating in England!)

To see the next video of my time at London Fashion Week, head to Simply Be's Facebook Page.

This is probably the most image heavy post I've ever done. I planned to do an instagram recap of my EuroTrip, but then realized there were lots of photos I hadn't posted from before I went overseas. Next time I won't wait so long, promise! I could break it up into two posts, but why prolong the inevitable?

Forgot the designer of this [super old] printed blouse, collar from Aldo//All about the pajama trend. Pants from Dorothy Perkins, top and bag from F21

Not over collar necklaces, clearly. Left from F21 (top from Dorothy Perkins), Right from H&M (top from F21)
Soaking up the last days of summer in Chicago, everything above from F21

ASOS earrings (here and here) //Amazing 90s inspired pizza nail wraps c/o RadNails (Saved by the Bell, anyone?)

Nicolette and I headed to our panel at IFBCon//Christian Siriano store opening (die for him and Allison Williams, obvs)

Top H&M+, Skirt F21+//26th Birthday dress from eloquii (bought last year, similar here)

Finally in London! Um, want a button for champagne and that dessert?! Head to Bob Bob Ricard

Got drunk//Hangover outfit (which I ended up wearing for half my trip): F21 leather look leggings, Kimberly Ovitz tee, Dorothy Perkins jacket, H&M flats

Heaven: Got to see the amazing things they have coming up for Curve this fall at ASOS HQ

Met up with some of my fellow fat girl bloggers to see Rani Zakhem's beautiful new collection.

Finally arrived in Valencia! Absolutely breathtaking.

The Mediterranean Sea//City of Arts and Science

My host Concha with her friends and family//Authentic Paella: The best meal I've had in my life (add this to your bucket list).

Then came Paris! Pont des Arts, the bridge where people lock their love//Walking the Parisian streets at night

Inside the Louvre//Louis Vuitton Flagship

There was more, of course, but hopefully this gives you an idea of my amazing trip. It was seriously one of the best months of my life. I already have plans to go back next year! Thank you again to everyone who was kind enough to host me: Nicolette, Callie, Concha, Sakina, I love you guys!

Essence Street Style

I recently shot an ambush street style video for Essence Magazine & Nissan Altima in NYC. I had one of those "I have nothing to wear" meltdowns the night before we shot, so I ran to the Forever21 in Times Square and literally bought a top, skinny jeans, jewelry and shoes for the next day. The makeup artist convinced me to go out of my comfort zone a bit with a sleek ponytail (with extensions of course) and I ended up loving it! Photobucket

What is that, Velvet?!

While in Paris I met up with one of my favorite ladies, Velvet D'Amour. You may know her as the badass fat girl who walked the catwalks for Gaultier and Galliano, but she's recently launched an e-mag called Volup2 which aims to expand society's definition of beauty (please make sure you support the kickstarter here). When she asked if I'd be interested in shooting a fun little video with her, of course I said yes! The problem was I only had a few outfits with me since I was traveling, so I decided to wear the tutu again. In fact, the only things I changed were my top and shoes, but with the addition of my curly hair and heavy eye makeup, I think I look a bit more rock 'n' roll, no?

Sidenote: So many of you have been asking about the tutu! Unfortunately it's not on the Dorothy Perkins website, it was one of their designer collaborations and they didn't have it above a size M/L (thank you, stretchy waistband). If you live in London, it may still be in stores. If not, I'd suggest searching etsy for something similar--I know that's where Jay got hers!

It's crazy how much the style of my hair can change the overall look of an outfit. I've been using my Paul Mitchell products (which have been a life saver and are now available at salons). The thing I like about their Curl Campaign is that they're encouraging women to be honest about the ups and downs of having curly hair. Here's my #CurlConfession: I'm not loving my hair right now. The thing about curly hair is it's super sensitive and reactive to different environments. In London, it refused to cooperate (thankfully in Paris--where the above vid was shot--it was much better); there are tons of reasons I'm happy to be back on American soil, but number one is that my hair is back to normal again!

I'm still sticking to the Paul Mitchell Spring Loaded Detangling Shampoo which is my favorite product from the line. After shampooing, I use their Full Circle Leave-In treatment which is really lightweight and makes the curl pattern better than ever. I just need to get back to NYC for a proper shape up, because currently it's suffering from the dreaded triangle thing (think Carrot Top). I know I promised a video on these products--it's still coming! Things were a little too crazy in Europe to get it done there.
